GRH performs 22 advanced corneal procedures in six months, improves vision outcomes
Madurai: The ophthalmology department at Government Rajaji Hospital (GRH) has performed 22 advanced corneal procedures in the past six months, offering specialised treatment for patients with progressive corneal disorders.During the period, 14 patients underwent Corneal Collagen Cross-Linking (C3R) and eight received Descemet's Stripping Endothelial Keratoplasty (DSEK), said Dr K Kavitha, head of the department.

C3R is a minimally invasive procedure that strengthens the cornea and halts the progression of keratoconus — a condition in which the cornea thins and bulges outward, leading to blurred or distorted vision. The procedure is typically recommended for young patients with progressive keratoconus. Visual stabilisation is usually achieved within two months, significantly faster than with conventional corneal transplant surgeries. DSEK, on the other hand, is performed when the inner layer of the cornea fails due to congenital disorders, ageing, or complications following eye surgery. The technique replaces only the damaged inner layer, allowing quicker recovery — typically within four to six weeks — and carries a lower risk of rejection compared to full-thickness corneal transplants.
Doctors advised people experiencing persistent eye itching, frequent changes in spectacle power, reduced vision, pain, or excessive watering to seek early evaluation for corneal disease. Early detection can prevent progression and improve outcomes. The department handles 250 to 300 outpatients daily and has 120 beds. Hospital authorities said an increasing number of patients are now opting for advanced corneal care at GRH, either free of cost or under the Chief Minister's Comprehensive Health Insurance Scheme, instead of seeking treatment at private facilities.
